Obligatory Realty Inc.

“Obligatory Realty Inc.” is a project built around a fictional scenario. By appropriating the familiar social image of real estate agencies, it seeks to provoke a contradiction in how people perceive social housing and private property. On one hand lies the inflation of private value; on the other, the redistribution of cyclical value. This tension exposes a long-standing anxiety over how value should be allocated, prompting reflection on the role of social housing within broader processes of social transformation. The project attempts to liberate the idea of “home” from the idealized narratives constructed by real estate advertising, bringing it closer to the realities embedded within society.

In Taiwan, only about 40% of social housing is allocated to those who are genuinely disadvantaged, and access is determined through a lottery system. Behind this seemingly absurd condition lies a complex web of structural issues. The initial concept of Obligatory Realty Inc. was to participate in these housing lotteries through proxy applicants, securing tenancy rights and privately transferring them to those in real need. In doing so, the project positions itself as an intermediary—an attempt to compensate for the inequities embedded within state-managed resource distribution.
